The Victoria and Albert Museum, located in South Kensington, London, is renowned globally for its extensive collection of decorative arts. Originally housing artifacts from the Great Exhibition of 1851 at Marlborough House, these items were relocated to the South Kensington Museum in 1857 to promote British manufacturing and cultural refinement. 

Over time, the institution expanded and was officially renamed the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1899. Queen Victoria laid the cornerstone for its current building, designed by Sir Aston Webb, which opened in 1909. Since then, the museum has grown, expanding into adjacent buildings.

In addition to its main location, the Victoria and Albert Museum oversees other sites such as the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. It previously managed the Wellington Museum and Theatre Museum until the early 2000s. Notably, V&A Dundee, focusing on Scottish design, opened in 2018.

The museum’s collections span a diverse array of European sculpture, ceramics, furniture, metalwork, jewelry, and textiles from medieval times to the present. Highlights include the Jones bequest of French furniture and porcelain, the Schreiber collection of English ceramics and glass, and the Currie collection of Italian and French arms and armor. Significant Indian and East Asian artworks are also prominently featured, including Chinese ceramics and jade.

In recent years, the V&A has introduced rapid response collecting, acquiring objects of contemporary significance such as the pussyhat from the 2017 Women’s March and the Xbox adaptive controller from 2018. This underscores its commitment to preserving cultural moments. The museum also houses the National Art Library and maintains extensive collections of British watercolors, miniatures, prints, and drawings.
